Came to power in a 1973 military coup that overthrew the democratically elected socialist government of President Salvador Allende. Chairman of the Government Junta of Chile (1973-1981), President and dictator of Chile in 1974-1990. Commander-in-Chief of the Chilean Armed Forces (1973-1998). Pinochet's presidency is also remembered for Chile's re-establishment of a market economy integrated into the global economy and a strong private sector presence.
