He was nominated for an Oscar a record 12 times. He is also one of only two actors to have been nominated for an Oscar for Best Actor (Leading or Supporting) in every decade since the 1960s (the other being Sir Michael Caine). In 1994, he became one of the youngest actors to be awarded the American Film Institute's Lifetime Achievement Award.
