US Senator from Arizona (1987–2018), Chairman of the US Senate Armed Services Committee (2015–2018). Veteran of the Vietnam War. He was shot down by a Soviet missile over Hanoi in 1967, spent five and a half years in Vietnamese captivity, and was released in 1973 under the terms of the Paris Agreement. In the 2008 elections, he was a Republican presidential candidate (McCain was officially supported by then-current President George W. Bush), but lost the election to the Democratic candidate Barack Obama.
