British explorer, holder of several endurance records, named "the world's greatest living explorer" by Guinness World Records in 1984. Perhaps Fiennes's most famous expedition is the Transglobal Expedition of 1979–1982, when he walked around the Earth along the prime meridian and then along the 180th, visiting first the South and then the North Poles. In 2009 he reached the summit of Everest, becoming the oldest Briton to conquer the mountain.
