Description
A framed collection of 32 original buttons from the American Civil War period (1861–1865), representing military and militia units across multiple states. The group includes examples associated with Maine, Ohio, Connecticut, Colorado, Nebraska, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Missouri, Michigan, Texas, Mississippi, as well as units such as the 23rd New York National Guard Regiment, the Massachusetts Volunteer Militia, the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company, the Hartford City Guard, and the New Hampshire Volunteer Militia.
The buttons date to the mid-19th century and range in size from approximately 1 to 5 inches in diameter. The reverse sides retain maker’s marks from period manufacturers, including Goodwins, Schuyler H & G, Pettibone, Scovill, and the Waterbury Button Company, all known suppliers of military insignia and uniform elements.
A commemorative badge marking the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg is included, adding a layer of historical reflection to the composition. The arrangement is set against a map of the United States, visually reinforcing the geographic scope of the conflict and the diversity of represented units.
Presented in a framed format combining a historical illustration with authentic artifacts and an engraved plaque, the work offers both documentary value and curated visual structure. It stands as a considered historical object suitable for collection or as a meaningful gift connected to American military history.
