GEORGY VITSIN (1917–2001)

An autograph of Georgy Vitsin, a stage and screen actor whose work holds a distinctive place in the history of twentieth-century film comedy. The handwritten signature is presented in an artist-designed presentation together with a still from Leonid Gaidai’s film “Kidnapping, Caucasian Style” and the line: “Long live our court, the most humane court in the world!” The phrase is spoken by Vitsin’s character, Coward, during the film’s final courtroom scene.

Vitsin created an extensive gallery of character roles, but Coward — one of the celebrated comic trio of Coward, Fool and Pro — occupies a particularly prominent place in his screen legacy. The character appeared in several of Leonid Gaidai’s comedies, with “Kidnapping, Caucasian Style” becoming one of Vitsin’s best-known films. His performances combined subtle irony, expressive grotesque and an understated lyricism that gave his comic characters their distinctive quality.

The composition centres on a film still featuring Georgy Vitsin, Evgeny Morgunov and Yuri Nikulin. Beneath it is a fragment bearing Vitsin’s handwritten signature, while a plaque with the celebrated line provides the final narrative element. Black matting and a restrained frame with gold-toned accents unite the photograph, autograph and quotation into a coherent memorabilia object directly associated with one of the actor’s most recognizable screen characters.
