Description
This particular coin is called "Tetrobol" which means "4 obols". In classical Greece, six obols constituted a drachma (a larger Greek silver coin similar to the Roman denarius). For one Obol, an ancient Greek could buy a "Kantaros" of wine (kitchen of wine), about 3 L or 100 US fluid ounces of wine. Three obols was the standard rate for prostitutes.
On a coin minted on the Greek island of Euboea, in the city of Histiaia, between 370-140 BC. e. depicts the elegant head of the nymph "Histia", from which the city got its name. The same nymph Histia is also depicted on the reverse, sitting on the bow of an ancient Greek galley.
A nymph is a secondary deity of female nature, usually associated with a certain place or terrain. Unlike goddesses, nymphs are usually considered divine spirits who animate nature, and are usually depicted as beautiful, young, married girls who love to dance and sing.
