MUHAMMAD ALI (1942–2016)

Boxing trunks bearing two Muhammad Ali autographs — “Cassius Clay” and “Muhammad Ali” — signed in black marker. The presence of both names on a single object directly evokes two defining periods in the boxer’s life, giving the piece a distinctive biographical and sporting significance.

Muhammad Ali, born Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr., was one of the defining figures of twentieth-century boxing. An Olympic champion in 1960 and a three-time world heavyweight champion, he became known far beyond the ring as one of the most recognizable figures in American culture of his era. He adopted the name Muhammad Ali in 1964, making the juxtaposition of the “Cassius Clay” and “Muhammad Ali” signatures particularly resonant within the context of his biography.

The white G&S Sporting Goods boxing trunks, detailed with contrasting black side panels, are displayed in an artist-designed presentation against a dark background within an ornate black frame with fine light-colored trim. Both signatures appear directly on the front of the trunks. A metal plaque reading “CASSIUS CLAY 1964 MUHAMMAD ALI” completes the composition and emphasizes the historic transition between the two names.

The authenticity of the signatures is confirmed by an international Global Authentics certificate, certification number GV926692. According to the Letter of Authenticity dated January 6, 2022, Global Authentics experts examined both signatures and determined them to be genuine. The combination of Ali’s two signature forms, the boxing-related object, and its gallery presentation gives the work significant collectible and commemorative value.
