Lina Vasylivna Kostenko was born on March 19, 1930 in the city of Rzhyshchiv, Kyiv region. She is an outstanding poet, writer, public figure, and laureate of numerous literary awards. Lina Kostenko is known as one of the representatives of the "sixties" - a generation of artists who defended freedom of creativity and opposed Soviet censorship.
She graduated from Taras Shevchenko Kyiv University, and then the Gorky Literary Institute in Moscow. Starting in 1957, she published a number of poetry collections, including “Rays of the Earth”, “Journey of the Heart” and “Above the Banks of the Eternal River”. Her novel in verse “Marusya Churay” became a real pearl of Ukrainian literature.
During the Soviet Union, Lina Kostenko’s work was often subjected to strict censorship. In particular, in the 1960s, her works were not published for about 16 years due to her principled position and refusal to compromise with the authorities.
The novel “Marusya Churay” received the Shevchenko Prize in 1987. It describes the fate of a famous Ukrainian songstress, who became a symbol of indomitability and the struggle for culture.
Lina Kostenko is known for her active civic activities. She spoke out against the Soviet occupation, supported the independence of Ukraine and expressed her opinion on current events in the country.
In the 1980s, she actively participated in the struggle to save the Dnieper rapids from flooding due to the construction of a hydroelectric power station.
Her work has been translated into many languages, making Lina Kostenko an ambassador of Ukrainian culture on the international stage.
