Kobe Bryant (1978-2020) is an American professional basketball player who played in the National Basketball Association for twenty seasons for one team, the Los Angeles Lakers. He played as an attacking defender. He was selected in the first round, 13th overall, by the Charlotte Hornets in the 1996 NBA Draft. Immediately after graduating from school, he began his career in the NBA. During this time, he won five championship titles, took part in the All-Star Game 18 times, was included in the All-Star Team 15 times and was named to the All-Star Defense Team 12 times. As a member of the US national team, he twice won Olympic gold and also won the American Championship. His four All-Star Game MVP awards are the most in NBA history. On April 14, 2016, he ended his NBA career, scoring 60 points in his last game with Utah. At age 34 years and 104 days, Bryant became the youngest player in league history to score 30,000 career points. He became the all-time leading scorer in Los Angeles Lakers franchise history on February 1, 2010, when he surpassed Jerry West. In 2018, he received an Oscar for Best Animated Short Film “Dear Basketball.” On January 26, 2020, at the age of 41, Kobe Bryant died in the crash of a private Sikorsky S-76 helicopter in Calabasas. Eight more people died in the disaster, including his 13-year-old daughter Gianna and family friends. Basketball Hall of Fame inductee since 2020.
